What is Dinner Party?

Dinner Party is a quick, dark-humoured dice game for 2 to 6 players that was successfully crowdfunded on Kickstarter and that will release in August 2025.
What it’s about
You’re the hosts of a dinner party, and your guests are people of history. Convince characters like Marie Curie, Cleopatra or Gandhi to join your table, use their special abilities and treat them to drinks from the bar. Send Adolf (who came uninvited and insists his invitation “got lost in the mail”) to the table of an opponent to ruin their evening, and make sure to keep your own guests entertained so other players won’t be able to charm them away from you. Only one can have the greatest party ever when the game ends and dinner is served!

Is Dinner Party a “Party Game”? Not quite. One one hand, Dinner Party is an accessible game with humor that plays quickly and comfortably supports up to six players. On the other hand, Dinner Party offers a more strategic depth than party games usually do.
Is Dinner Party an educational game? Yes, but Dinner Party is not a trivia game. All information in the game is implicit, stored in the card abilities, Occupation icons, and flavour texts on the cards. Players aren’t required to recite historical information to win. In spite of (or because of) this, many players want to know why e.g. Dostoevsky’s ability makes him roll again, why Hemingway gives points for wine, and who that pirate is they never heard of. This way, Dinner Party does challenge players to learn, and many of our playtesters and reviewers have singled this out as a remarkable trait of the game. This is in line with an approach Michael (the designer) has used in the past for educational games, such as the award-winning mobile game Bronzeon, which was created in cooperation with Prof. Stockhammer from Munich’s university LMU.
For teachers considering to use the game as an educational tool, the Deluxe Edition contains a booklet with a short paragraph for each of the over 200 characters currently available for the game.
Is Dinner Party a “political” game, and if yes, what are your politics? Dinner Party isn’t trying to heavy-handedly push a specific political agenda, but it does work under the premise that its players can agree on a few things: That fascism is bad, that racism and nazism are bad, and that empathy and compassion are virtues. If you cannot agree with these things, you will not enjoy Dinner Party.
Dinner Party also contains religious leaders of the past, and doesn’t pick any religion to push as “the true one”. If this offends you, the game is not for you, either.
Why is Hitler in this game? We wanted to make a game about all of history, not just the pleasant parts. This meant we had to include awful people, and if we did so, we could hardly leave out the worst of them. To make very clear what we think of him, we made Hitler a Guest who is always bad for the player, and who is worth no points at all. We feel it sends a clear message about the place we see for him and his pals in history.
Are you using AI generated art? No. All the art has been drawn by the designer, Michael Spitzer, by hand, on a tablet. All badly-drawn hands were badly drawn by a human. In some cases, a software tool has been used to upscale graphics (increase their resolution) for better printability.
How well does Dinner Party play with 2 players? Very well. Dinner Party has been playtested with all player counts, and very often with two players to make sure that it’s just as enjoyable. The only rules change you have for two players is that you flip the Hitler card to its other side, so it’s a little more effort to shove him over to your opponent.
How well does Dinner Party play with 6 players? The game plays well with all player counts, but you will see an increase in play time with 5 or 6 players, and the game can definitely take over an hour. This also depends on player decisions.
